Quality Food and Fair Trade – Noops

Quality Food and Fair Trade

Did you know that October is the National Fair Trade month? We are so excited to share this with you. We also wanted to tell you a little bit about how we all help noops provide quality nutrition around the world. However, before we let you in on some pretty cool things our pudding cravings are doing for others, we thought we would tell you a bit about Fair Trade and what it means for the planet.

The fair trade movement began with growing urgency back in 1992 due to the difficulties small Mexican coffee plantations had with getting equal business rights and practices in the industry. The awareness around fair business practices then spread to cacao in Brazil. With two of the world's favorite and deeply enjoyed foods, chocolate and coffee, leading the way, it wasn’t long until many industries began to recognize and respect the need for using socially, commercially, and environmentally sustainable products. The Fairtrade Foundation has been working continuously to bring these issues to light and connect people around the world through quality food and business.

Now you can find the Fairtrade mark on many products who have agreed to honor these sustainable practices. The Fairtrade Foundation has created global networks, and as a result, fair trade communities and towns have popped up to unite citizens in recognizing fair trade products and choosing to use them over other commercially available options. While this continues to be a growing effort, National Fair Trade month began in 2004 with the hopes of informing more people of the importance in choosing products that give back to humanity. It is a time to highlight the amazing foods and products in our everyday lives in the hopes that we begin to use them more exclusively. It is a way for each of us to do our small part to help the planet and all the amazing people in it.

So what does this have to do with your afternoon chocolate oatmilk pudding? Everything!

We are determined to change the world through the power of pudding. We figure if you’re going to go big, you might as well go all the way! Besides, we're all in this together, starting with noop’s founder, Gregory Struck

If you don’t know much about him, that’s ok. You can hear his story first hand in his interview with Fairtrade America, but for now, we’ll let you in on some of the highlights. Did you know that noops was created by someone with a raging sweet tooth? That’s why it tastes so good! What you probably don’t know is that the sweet tooth was being denied due to Gregory’s, noops founder and father of two, battle with cancer along with a genetic disorder, both grave in their own rights. Determined to not leave his family, Gregory embraced the knowledge that food is medicine and turned his entire world upside down. He began a plant-based diet which included turning away from all dairy and denying himself some of his favorite desserts and pleasures.

It was during one of these cravings, wandering the sweet and creamy section of the supermarket, that he began to think about pudding. This little nudge had him look into the simple treat and see that it really hadn’t changed since its initial creation in 1897. This got him thinking about all the desserts and treats we grow up with, that his own children were growing up with, and how we learn from a young age to enjoy and even crave foods that could later damage our bodies in innumerable ways. Fighting his own health battles made Gregory realize that he didn’t want this for his own children or for anyone else if he could help it.

This determination, appreciation for the sweeter things in life, and deep belief in the power of food to heal people around the world drove him to create the ultimate snack food: organic, dairy free, allergen friendly, fully plant based, puddings with zero added sugar!

What could possibly be better than that?

How about creating a pudding empire?

Even better, an empire which follows the Fairtrade principles of sustainable product sourcing! Gregory and the noops family took a hard look at the supply chain and partners for not only quality but also standards. The passion behind the pudding was more than clean food. It was clean business and creating something that everyone felt good being a part of. We look for third party certifications and are proud to deliver a delicious snack filled with cocoa and cacao butter that is Fairtrade certified by Fairtrade America and Flocert. We chose oats grown in the Western Canadian prairie provinces. And the majority of our ingredients are homegrown in the U.S. and Canada.

Simply eating a creamy, sweet noops pudding snack means you are making a good decision for your body and for fair trade practices. However, we wanted to take it a step further. By scanning the noops QR code on each flavor-packed purchase, you get to give part of your purchase back to charities that help to make quality, healthy, sustainable foods a right instead of a privilege. We donate our time, our money, and our pudding where it is needed most! We don’t plan on stopping until everyone has access to healthy foods made by companies who value ingredients, the planet, and humanity.

This was the vision Gregory started with, and it has now become the vision all of us noops pudding lovers have embraced as well. Each tasty snack gives back to your body and the charitable partners we have aligned with: wellfare, Whole Kids Foundation, and Fight2Feed. We are all intentional in choosing to change the world by recognizing it as our responsibility and our opportunity. We take integrity seriously as we build noops as an agent for change, focusing on eating good, doing good, and being good. And we thank you for joining us in the power of pudding!
